Future Pathways

Exploring futures with confidence

As pupils grow older, we want them to leave Freemen’s with the confidence, curiosity and independence to take their next steps. Our Future Pathways programme provides structured careers guidance from Year 7 to Year 13, underpinned by the Career Development Institute Framework and the Gatsby Benchmarks.

Careers education is woven into PSHE lessons, supported by dedicated staff, online platforms such as Unifrog, and a well-resourced Careers Area. Pupils can access advice in assemblies, small groups and one-to-one meetings throughout their time here.

In the Lower Senior years, pupils begin to explore:
  • who they are and what they enjoy
  • different jobs and workplaces
  • how their strengths might shape future pathways
This includes themed assemblies, employer panels, an introduction to Unifrog, careers and climate discussions, early CV work, and enterprise days like the National Careers Challenge and CGI STEM events.
In Year 10 and Year 11, the focus shifts to decision-making and preparation:
  • the Future Pathways Fair, with universities and employers on site
  • guidance on GCSE options, apprenticeships and US/overseas study
  • assemblies on employability skills and A Level choices
  • psychometric testing and one-to-one meetings to discuss results and subject choices
  • an Activities Day and mock interview events
By the end of Year 11, pupils have a much clearer sense of their direction and the subjects that will support it.
In Years 12 and 13, pupils turn ideas into concrete plans. They receive targeted support for:
  • UK university applications (UCAS)
  • Oxbridge, Medicine, Veterinary and Dentistry
  • apprenticeships and school-leaver routes
  • international applications, including the USA and other countries
  • building experience and networks to support their CV and personal statements
This includes:
  • Higher Education launch events for pupils and parents
  • talks from top universities and visiting speakers
  • workshops on personal statements, CommonApp and admissions tests
  • one-to-one meetings with the Head of Future Pathways and specialist coordinators
  • assemblies on student finance, results day and clearing
The aim is simple: that every leaver feels prepared and supported – whichever pathway they choose.
