Our Senior Leadership Team brings together expertise in teaching, pastoral care, operations and innovation. They ensure that pupils thrive academically, personally and socially throughout their time at Freemen’s.
Roland Martin became Headmaster of Freemen's in 2015.
Roland grew up in a council house and won a Foundation scholarship to Rendcomb College in Gloucestershire, where he spent seven years as a boarder and was fully involved in the academic and co-curricular life of the School. He read English and Related Literature at York, ‘where everyone said I should be a teacher, but I was stubborn and male and didn’t want to do anything I was told to…’ Eventually, he saw sense and started his first role as a teacher of English at Newcastle-under-Lyme School where he coached hockey and cricket and directed seven plays and reviews.
He moved to Eton after six years where he taught English and drama for 13 years, continuing to coach and direct as well as taking on pastoral responsibilities as an Assistant House Master, Head of Year 11 and ultimately as a House Master for five and a half years. He returned to his alma mater, Rendcomb, in 2011 for his first headship before moving to Freemen’s.
Oonagh has responsibility for Finance, HR, IT, Estates, External Relations and Operations, as well as building projects for Freemen’s.
Oonagh worked for over 20 years in senior management roles in the financial services sector in the City and has extensive experience in managing strategic relationships, initiatives, projects and budgets.
More recently, she has transferred these skills to work in education. Oonagh was Chief Operating Officer of 13 schools in a Multi-Academy Trust and was tasked with strategically leading and managing all of the Business Support aspects of that Trust.
She has a B.A. (Hons) in Sociology and Economics from University College Cork and has completed postgraduate diplomas in Legal Studies and Financial Services.
She is a passionate rugby fan and lifelong Munster supporter.
Stuart oversees the pastoral care of the pupils at Freemen’s and the day-to-day running of the School.
Stuart read Philosophy and Theology at Oxford and has worked in academically selective independent schools for 23 years. He served for nine years in the Territorial Army, which included a tour of Iraq in 2004.
Stuart is an active member of his local church and is Chairman of an Oxford-based ‘wandering’ cricket club.
Paul oversees the curriculum at Freemen's, namely all that the students learn whilst they are at school.
With a degree in Politics and Economics and a Masters in Educational Leadership his experience of educational leadership includes a founding headship in the Middle East and is coupled with a deep belief in the value of a top-quality education.
Anna began her HR career in the Financial Services industry where she worked for 15 years focusing on organisational change, policy development and employment law.
She studied Business at Edinburgh University and completed her post graduate diploma in Personnel Management at the University of Westminster.
She has a passion for life-long learning and supporting the development of others.
Lisa oversees admissions, marketing and development at Freemen's.
Lisa joined Freemen’s at the end of April 2024 coming from a business development role at a multi academy trust. As Director of External Relations at Freemen’s Lisa oversees the admissions, marketing, and development teams.
Lisa has extensive experience in education, business development, Local Authority advisory roles, sales and marketing, in both the private and public sector.
Rachel Keightley joined Freemen’s in 2016.
Appointed to the role of Head of Sixth Form in 2025, she is dedicated to making every Sixth Form student feel part of our school community. She encourages students to develop leadership skills by running clubs, acting as role models, and taking on responsibilities across the school.
Rachel believes our individualised pathways heighten student experience, and acknowledge that students thrive when given better autonomy over their studies.
With a balance of supported study, free time, and tailored guidance, she ensures students are well-prepared for their future pathways, whether through UCAS, careers advice, or wider opportunities.
Sophie joined Freemen's in 2017 and is the Head of Upper School as well as the lead on Wellbeing at Freemen's.
Sophie is very passionate about researching and then developing the best ways to help children to thrive, not just survive, as they move through their school life. Her commitment to this is helping to drive the wellbeing focus for the School for not only pupils but also staff and parents.
David is Head of the Junior School and has oversight of all children within Key Stage Two as well as taking the lead on sustainability.
He has held a variety of roles in the Prep School sector with a burning passion for creating an environment where a love of learning is fostered and celebrated in all that we do.
David is a strong advocate for the importance of lifelong skills and preparing the child for the road, rather than preparing the road for the child.
When not in school, David is an avid cyclist and surfer. He also has a guilty pleasure for Lego and all things Harry Potter!
Mr Auld is Head of Boarding and holds ultimate responsibility for all the pupils in the boarding house. He is the first point of contact with parents and guardians.
Alan lives in Walbrook (the boarding house) with his wife and two young children and is almost always available to pupils. Mr Auld teaches both Geography and History as well as taking on sports teams as part of the PE and Games Department. Outside of school, Mr Auld enjoys spending time with his young family and playing sport, notably rugby and cricket (despite coming from the wet west coast of Scotland).
Chris leads learning at Freemen's, supporting both staff and students.
Unique to a Freemen's education are the learning Opportunities he ensures are threaded through lessons to ensure that all our children learn, lead and make a difference now and in the future.
Chris is also a trained Coaching Facilitator with Graydin and believes in finding opportunities to ensure all have a voice and, as a Philosophy teacher, ensuring all use it to argue, persuade and listen to opposing views. Away from the Philosophy classroom Chris loves playing all types of sport but especially Cricket.
Emma oversees staff development through planning a continued professional learning programme, along with looking after staff wellbeing.
Emma feels passionately about making a difference for the staff, so that they can be their best selves to support the pupils and students. She studied Law at university and qualified as a solicitor in 2002. She retrained to be a teacher in 2003 and joined the Freemen's community in 2004 working in the KS2 section. She really believes in the importance of promoting life skills within the pupils' and students' school experiences.
Sarah joined the school in 2023.
Sarah has oversight of Inclusive Learning throughout the school with responsibility for ensuring pupils can access the curriculum and thrive in all areas of school life.
Sarah is a specialist in neuro-diversity and dyslexia and is passionate about ensuring pupils develop an understanding of their strengths and challenges and adopt strategies to orientate life, both here at school and beyond.
Jamie oversees the Co-curriculum at Freemen's including the House system.
Jamie studied Sport and Exercise Science at University. As former Director of Sport at Freemen's he has a strong passion for sport, however also has had a love of music and drama from childhood. He believes that all pupils benefit from the holistic nature of School, encompassing not only a first-class academic education but also the many benefits of a first-class Co-curricular programme.
