On Thursday, our Lower Sixth pupils celebrated their Free Minds Graduation, marking the culmination of an important programme that encourages personal growth, resilience and self-reflection. Inspired by the Liberal Arts model found in universities in the UK and the US, the programme exposes pupils to a diverse range of subjects taught by Freemen’s expert staff. Lower Sixth pupils choose five six-week courses, broadening their knowledge and developing skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.

Following the graduation ceremony, pupils were treated to an inspiring talk from Matthew Burns, who is currently performing in the West End production of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. As well as appearing in the show, Matt serves as its Music Captain and Associate Creative, having been involved in its development since 2019. Most recently, he also starred alongside Brian Cox in The Score, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn at Theatre Royal Bath.

Matt shared his journey into the theatre industry, speaking candidly about both the successes and challenges of building a career in the West End and beyond. He gave pupils a fascinating insight into the eight-year development of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, explaining how the production evolved through years of creative work, the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to continually adapt to unexpected, last-minute changes.

Throughout his talk, Matt emphasised the importance of resilience, flexibility and embracing opportunities, encouraging pupils to remain open to change rather than feeling confined to a single path.

One piece of advice particularly resonated with the audience: “If you are to describe yourself, describe yourself as a verb and not a noun, to prevent yourself getting stuck in one place, career or lifestyle.”

His message encouraged pupils to think of themselves as people who are constantly learning, growing and evolving, rather than defining themselves by a single role or title.

The session left Lower Sixth pupils with plenty to reflect on as they look ahead to their own futures, reminding them that success often comes from perseverance, adaptability and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.
