Freemen’s Modern Languages team hosted the 13th Love Languages competition last week.

This highly successful languages competition has now been running since 2011 and is open to all students in Years 5 to 8. The theme this year was “Holidays” and performances were judged by Mr Jim Davis and Mrs Anne Boyd.

Performances were judged on three criteria; quality of language, creativity and originality and quality of performance.

Freemen’s Year 5 and Year 6 pupils competed against pupils from Norland Place School, London; St David’s School, Purley; Greville School, Ashtead, St Catherine’s School, Bramley and Newland House School, Twickenham.

Nonsuch High School, Sutton; Tiffin School, Kingston Upon Thames; St Catherine’s School Bramley; Notre Dame School, Cobham and Reading Blue Coat School competed in the Year 7 and Year 8 category.

Freemen’s was awarded a Judges’ Highly Commended Rosette.

In the Year 5  and 6 category, Norland Place School were crowned the winner, while Newland House were named runners’ up.

Reading Bluecoat were named the winners in the Year 7 and Year 8 category, Tiffin School picked up the runners’ up prize.

“At Freemen’s we firmly believe it is important to engender a sense of enjoyment and confidence in the language from a very early stage, and it is great to see so many schools get involved with Love Languages and we congratulate everyone for their hard work and effort,” commented the Languages department.

In September 2023, we introduced an exciting new curriculum in KS2 which is giving pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of languages in addition to our traditional French, German and Spanish. Pupils will be able to learn languages as diverse as Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and even a South American language called Quechua.

In KS3, we aim to maintain that range and keep options open for our linguists by offering five key languages: French, German, Latin, Mandarin and Spanish.

At Freemen’s languages are considered to be an integral part of the curriculum and all pupils take at least one language for GCSE.
