Lessons from the First Term: A Reflection on Freemen’s Ethos and Our Path Forward

As we draw the curtain on the first term of the academic year at City of London Freemen’s School, it is the perfect moment to reflect on the achievements, lessons, and experiences that have shaped our students and school community. With a commitment to excellence, our ethos of "Learn, Lead, and Make a Difference" is at the core of everything we do, fostering a positive and supportive environment for all.

Learning in a Supportive Environment

At Freemen’s, education goes beyond the classroom, focusing on each pupil as an individual. This first term has been a testament to the power of personalised learning. Our small class sizes allow teachers to get to know each student, tailoring support to ensure they not only meet academic challenges but also develop skills that will carry them far beyond school. Whether it is Year 3 team-building days or Year 11 Drama workshops inspired by renowned theatre practitioners, every experience is designed to engage and enrich students’ learning journeys.

Developing Leadership Skills

One of the defining features of a Freemen’s education is the emphasis on leadership development. Our students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and develop the confidence to lead in various spheres of school life. From leading classroom discussions to participating in school councils or representing Freemen’s in sporting competitions, our students learn to take the initiative and cultivate a sense of responsibility.

This term, Freemen’s athletes shone across various sporting disciplines, including our IAPS Netball finalists and the under-13 football and rugby teams. These achievements not only highlight their talent but also their ability to work together, face challenges, and emerge stronger as leaders and team players.

Building a Positive Community

At Freemen’s, we believe that a positive school culture is essential to a student’s success. The close-knit community here is built on mutual respect, care, and shared values. This was evident in our charitable initiatives, where students and staff came together to support important causes through fundraising and community outreach.

In our After School Club, younger students embraced the opportunity to learn about the unique traditions and history associated with the City of London, such as the time-honoured Sheep Drive. These moments teach our pupils about the importance of history, community, and how they can contribute to the world around them.

Nurturing Well-Being and Balance

A cornerstone of our approach is ensuring that students maintain a healthy balance between their studies and their well-being. From mindfulness exercises to structured breaks, students are encouraged to find time to relax, reflect, and recharge.

At Freemen’s, well-being is not just an afterthought—it is a priority. We strive to create an environment where students can thrive, balancing their academic pursuits with personal growth.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

As we step into the next term, we carry forward the lessons and experiences gained during this first term. Our commitment to nurturing every student’s potential remains strong. Whether through a rigorous academic curriculum, extensive extracurricular activities, or a supportive and inclusive community, Freemen’s provides a foundation for students to excel, lead, and make a meaningful impact on the world.

Our mission is clear: to empower students to learn with curiosity, lead with confidence, and contribute with compassion.
