Students Hold Their Own in Model United Nations

Eleven students, who are part of the MUN club and MUN enrichment at Freemen's, were split into two teams representing the countries of Myanmar and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Topics debated included The Rights of Suspected Terrorists in the Human Rights Committee and The Problem of Infant Mortality in the Economic and Social Committee.

The students worked really hard in the debates with Lower 6 students, Tom Hobbs and Ella Worsfold both winning 'Outstanding Delegates' in their committees and Sophie Dixon winning 'Highly Commended Delegate'. Finally, the Myanmar team won 'Highly Commended Delegation' overall and the DPRK team was mentioned various times in the closing ceremony.

Freemen's MUN Coordinator, Mrs E Smith said of the students' efforts: "Taking part in the MUN conference really helped the students to develop their debating and diplomacy skills, especially as they had to represent another country. They had to develop empathy with another perspective that might not be their own and make sure they did not cause offence to any other country. All their practices at School and other conferences paid off and Tom Hobbs did a fabulous job of holding his own as DPRK when other nations were fighting strongly against him. The students thought it was an amazing experience and they particularly enjoyed gaining an understanding of different cultures whilst solving difficult problems together."
