Freemen’s is looking forward to welcoming the DSM Foundation to present a play called ‘I Love You Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die’ to our 200 Upper 4 and Lower 5 pupils on Monday 9 March in the Recital Hall.
The DSM Foundation is a drug and alcohol education charity working with young people, parents, teachers and professionals through workshops and lessons to tell Dan’s story. Daniel Spargo-Mabbs was 16 years old when he died. He was one of the very last people anyone would have expected to come to harm from drugs, but he did. His family felt if this could happen to someone like Dan, it could happen to anyone, and they wanted to do all they could to prevent this.
The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation exists to make sure no harm happens to another young person through drugs or alcohol, and that all other young people get to go home safely.
Daniel had a passion for drama and as an incredibly powerful way to communicate important messages to young people, the DSM Foundation commissioned award winning playwright Mark Wheeller to write a play about what happened to Daniel. The title Mark chose uses Dan’s last words to his mother Fiona, before he left home for what turned out to be the last time: ‘I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won’t Die’. The final play is as much about love, friendship, forgiveness and loss, as it is about drugs.
Mark’s play has become a powerful part of our PSHE curriculum, helping our young people to understand the risks, and potential consequences and impact, of experimenting with drugs.
