We thoroughly enjoyed the return of Love Languages week this term, hosted by our Modern Foreign Languages Department.
Many of our pupils took advantage of a Japanese virtual taster session, when we were delighted to welcome Mayu Negami Handford - lecturer at Cardiff University - to Freemen’s. Keen to diversify their knowledge and understanding of other cultures, Freemen’s pupils learnt how to greet one another and introduce themselves in Japanese. On behalf of all of us at Freemen’s ArigatÅgozaimasu Mayu Negami Handford for your insightful introduction. Pupils also enjoyed a Chinese New Year-themed Mandarin taster session, with over 50 Junior pupils taking part.
The week ended with a lunchtime careers talk hosted by Dr Horan from UCL. Freemen’s students from Year 9 to Year 13 were joined virtually by pupils from local schools, City of London Academy, Highgate Hill and City of London School for Girls, where they enjoyed an introduction to careers in languages. Dr Horan spoke about what it means to study languages at A Level and beyond and about traditional language degrees as well as other popular combinations. The importance of incorporating languages into your studies, not least to learn about other cultures and business practices certainly came across. Thank you to the Languages Department for arranging these events.
